Resident Assistant Selection

Resident Assistants (RAs) are part-time student staff members of the Housing and Greek Life Office (HGLO) and of the University of the Pacific.  For students, life on campus is about having fun and meeting new friends, while being in an atmosphere that is safe and conducive to learning.  It is important that our residence hall and apartment communities foster students' experiences that assist in their academic success. Resident Assistants have a critical role in creating these communities in our residence halls and apartments, and are instrumental in the success of the students they serve by helping them integrate, navigate and learn from their experiences inside and outside of the classroom.  RAs facilitate interpersonal relationships and create living situations that maximize opportunities for them and their peers to learn and grow.  RAs BUILD COMMUNITY!

The Resident Assistant position is extremely rewarding and calls for dedicated, motivated, and sincere individuals.  The Housing and Greek Life Office is committed to hiring staff members who reflect the values mentioned above and represent the diversity of University of the Pacific student populations.

  • Resident Assistant Job Description 

    The Resident Assistant Job Description


    Resident Assistants' (RAs) main function is to foster and develop community with and among students living in the residential areas on campus.   In general, RAs are expected to possess a positive attitude which embraces the philosophies, mission, policies and procedures of the Housing and Greek Life Office, as well as the larger institution.  Staff members are expected to exercise personal judgment to protect their credibility in the eyes of others; this is critical to their ability to perform and be successful in the position.  Through the use of programming, counseling and advising, RAs serve as peer educators and the main points of contact for students in the residence halls. Resident Assistants are supervised by Residence Directors.

    Essential Functions:

    Community Development:
    (1) Creates a sense of unity among residents through developing relationships and encouraging involvement. (2) Responsible for creating a friendly, respectful and safe environment for residents. (3) Establishes relationships with all of their residents and remains available and approachable to residents. (4) Is aware of and addresses community trends. (5) Supports hall government members and programs.
    (6) Develops relationships with residents through daily interactions.

    (1) Plans and implements activities, events, and passive education to meet the interests and needs of residents. (2) Completes bulletin boards and door decorations by appropriate deadlines. (3) Supports Housing and Greek Life sponsored and hosted events.  

    Duty Responsibilities:
    (1) Completes duty rounds of the building to promote the safety and security of the community as assigned. (2) Addresses behaviors and manages/refers issues. (3) Covers holiday and break periods, including Fall, Thanksgiving and Spring Break. (4) Covers week night and weekend duty according to arrangements set by area.  (5) Responds to situations according to protocols and procedures.  

    Student Conduct and Issues:
    (1) Confronts and follows up with students who have violated policy in an objective, consistent and respectful manner and addresses behavioral issues. (2) Clarifies and communicates rationale of university policies and expectations. (3) Shows care and concern for preserving relationship and helping students navigate decision making and behavior (4) Meets with residents who are experiencing concerns (roommate conflicts, personal issues, etc.) and refers them to the appropriate resource for assistance as necessary.  

    Staff Development:
    (1) Participates in mandatory staff meetings and required ongoing training. (2) Acts as a team player by establishing effective and collaborative working relationships with fellow staff members, supervisor and others within the department. (3) Gives and receives constructive feedback regarding job performance. (4) Takes steps to further one's own personal and professional development.

    General Administration:
    (1) Submits complete and timely paperwork (programming reports, duty logs, weekly reports, incident reports, etc.). (2) Attends staff and other department engagements as appropriate. (3) Maintains open communication with Residence Director and Area Coordinators (AC.) (4) Assists with the opening and closing of the residence communities at the beginning and end of each semester as well as break periods. (5) Follows through on all tasks and assignments in the specified timeframe. (6) Budgets time and balances activities effectively. (7) Maintains accurate programming, budget, and records information.  

    Physical Requirements:
    Work performed in/outdoors; ability to lift 25 lbs; frequent walking, sitting, standing, bending, kneeling, twisting, climbing stairs; use of phone and computer is required.  

    Other Duties as Assigned:
    Other duties in line with requirements and responsibilities of the RA position.

  • RA Minimum Qualifications 

    RA Candidates must meet the following Minimum Qualifications (by time of application and date of hire unless otherwise designated):

    • Have 24 units completed (12 credits must be at Pacific)
    • Have a minimum GPA of 2.5 (semester & cumulative) at time of application and at time of hire
    • Be in good conduct standing  (may not violate policies if currently on probation, be serving a suspension or a suspension in abeyance )
    • Be a registered/degree-seeking student
    • Have a minimum course load of 12 undergraduate credits or 9 graduate credits for each semester on staff
    • Have a maximum course load of 18 undergraduate credits or 12 graduate credits for each semester on staff
  • RA Time Commitment 

    The RA Position takes up approximately 15-20 non duty hours per week.  This means in addition to duty, you can expect to spend approximately 15-20 hours each week on the RA position.  This estimation can be more or less depending on what is happening on your floor during a given week.  It also depends on how proactive you are with residents in addressing issues early and building a positive community.  In order to ensure that RAs can effectively balance their academic and position responsibilities, we heavily weigh candidates' level of involvement in other campus activities.  The RA position is for the entire academic year.

    • Opening/Closing Building - All staff will participate in opening/closing the buildings at the start and end of each semester. This will require staff to arrive about three weeks prior to the building opening and stay several days past the official close date of the buildings.

    • Holiday Duty - All staff members will participate in holiday duty rotations. Holiday duty includes: Thanksgiving Break and Spring Break. Staff should not make travel plans until after speaking with their supervisor.
  • RA Training Requirements 

    Staff members are required to attend training and continuing development sessions to develop their skills and knowledge.  Therefore, you will be asked to plan your schedule accordingly to make sure you are present for each of the required trainings listed below.  You will be required to return to campus early, during the summer and the winter breaks to attend the August and January trainings - usually between 1-3 weeks before the start of class. Training is imperative to the RA position and attendance is mandatory. RAs cannot be enrolled in classes during Summer Session III and cannot work Orientation 3 due to August training.

    • August Training - All staff will participate in training which will take place approximately three (3) weeks prior to the start of classes in August.

    • January Training - All staff will participate in training which will take place approximately 5 days prior to the start of classes in January.

    • Continuing Development Sessions - All staff will participate in at least one (1) continuing development sessions throughout the semester. Time, locations and topics will be disclosed each semester.

    • Community Staff Meetings - Staffs will participate in weekly staff and one-on-one meetings with their Residence Director. These meetings are intended to share important information, plan programs and events, and develop as a team.

    • Note: Staff assigned to residence halls are required to select a minimum of a "Silver meal plan" and those in apartment communities must select a minimum of a "Bronze meal plan."

  • Frequently Asked Questions 

    What will I need to submit with my application?
    In addition to completing the application and the questions, you will need to submit a resume and contact information for two references.  

    I am unable to create an account when I am on the application home page.  What can I do?
    The first time you arrive to the home page, you'll need to create an account.  Your username will be your @u.pacific.edu email address.  If you continue to experience difficulties, please contact rasearch@pacific.edu and include your name, student ID number, and indicate if you live on or off campus.

    Which semester will be checked to determine academic eligibility for the RA position?
    We will look at the semester and cumulative grade point averages (GPAs) earned by the end of the Fall 2014 semester.  We will also verify both semester and cumulative GPAs at the end of the Spring 2015 semester for candidates who are offered a Resident Assistant position.

    How do I learn more about the Resident Assistant position?
    We encourage you to review the job description section and attend one of the information sessions that will be held in November and January.  Committee members and a Resident Assistant will provide an overview of the job, requirements and answer questions.  We will also host Cookie Socials in November and January where you can meet current Resident Assistants and ask questions in an informal setting.  Additionally, you can speak to a current Resident Assistant, Residence Director or Area Coordinator to learn more about the position.

    Can someone review my resume prior to submitting my application?
    Yes, the Career Resource Center (located in the McCaffrey Center) is available to review your resume.

    Who can I use as a reference?
    When selecting a reference, we encourage you to ask an individual who has observed and can speak to the skills and experiences you can bring to the position.  Examples include faculty, teachers, coaches, advisors, supervisors, etc.

    Can someone assist me with preparing for the interview?
    Yes, the Career Resource Center assists with interviews, and students are invited to schedule a time for a mock interview.  Many students find this to be very helpful in practicing interviewing skills.

    Can I verify if my reference has completed the form?
    Yes, you can access your application, select the "supporting docs" link, and completed references will have a check mark next to their name.  As a reminder, all references must be submitted by Wednesday, February 4, 2015.

    I submitted the names for references, but they have not received an email requesting that they complete the reference form.  What can I do?
    There are a few options to help with this issue: Ask your reference to check the "spam" or "junk" folder in their email.  In some instances, email is accidentally directed to these folders.  Your reference can also add noreply@erezlife.com to their safe senders list.   Applicants can access their application, select the "supporting docs" tab, and resend the email. Applicants can also log into their application, select the "supporting docs" link, and verify if the name and contact information is correct.   Remember to resend your reference the email if you have made any corrections. For continued problems, contact rasearch@pacific.edu with the name of the reference and the contact information.

    I received an email stating that my application was incomplete?
    We ask that you log into your application and click on the submit button at the end of the application to complete the process.  Keep in mind that late application will not be accepted.

    I have a conflict with the interview date.  Can I schedule a different time?
    Candidates are required to complete both the individual and group process; therefore, we ask that you set aside the scheduled interview date.  Unfortunately, we are unable to guarantee that we can set up an alternate time to complete both parts of the process.  Students who are studying abroad during the interview date will need to contact rasearch@pacific.edu.

    I was offered an alternate RA position.  What does this mean for me?
    Candidates who accept the alternate RA position will be placed on a list of alternate RAs.  Should a position become available prior to the following application cycle deadline the RD or committee member will contact you if they would like to offer you a position.
